MILLICENT MIN, GIRL GENIUS wins the prestigious Sid Fleischman Humor Award
Lisa Yee’s novel, Millicent Min, Girl Genius (Arthur A. Levine Books), was the recipient of the 2003 Sid Fleischman Humor Award. The award, bestowed by the Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators, is given annually to an author whose work exemplifies excellence in the writing of humor. Yee is a Southern California SCBWI member; this is her first novel.
The SCBWI established the award to honor humorous work, so often overlooked in children’s literature by other award committees. Sid Fleischman, the award’s inaugural recipient and namesake, was among the judges who selected Millicent Min, Girl Genius from more than 1,000 entries.
Fleischman has written over 35 books for children, including the classic McBroom series, Jim Ugly, The 13th Floor, The Ghost in the Noonday Sun, By the Great Horn Spoon!, and his autobiography, The Abracadabra Kid, about his early career as a young magician. He was awarded the Newbery Medal in 1987 for The Whipping Boy. His most recent book, Disappearing Act, was published by Greenwillow Books. Find out more at www.sidfleischman.com.
The Sid Fleischman Humor Award was presented on Sunday, August 8th during the Golden Kite Awards Luncheon. This luncheon was part of the SCBWI’s 33rd Annual Conference on Writing and Illustrating for Children, which took place at the Century Plaza Hotel August 6-9, 2004.
